Reverse osmosis is one of the finest level of filtration techniques available today. The RO membrane acts as a barrier, thus separating all dissolved solids and inorganic molecules with a molecular weight greater than approximately 100 gmol-1. Water molecules, on the other hand, pass freely through the membrane creating astream of ultrapure water. Almost 95-99% of the dissolved salts and minerals are separated through this process.

Reverse osmosis is a separation technology used to remove dissolved impurities from water by using  a semi-permeable membrane. RO involves the reversal of flow from the side of high salinity, containing impuritesat a higher concentration, to the side of high purity through the aforementioned membrane.External pressure is applied to act as a driving force for the separation. This external pressure (P) must be in excess of the natural osmotic pressure of the dissolved contaminants to allow for flow across the membrane.
